Quite a few of my clients have come to the States from foreign countries, and others send me their work directly from overseas. I have by now had a good deal of experience in helping these authors with their particular problems.
This is the same section, with the editorial changes printed in red. Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode most often found in areas with a moist, warm climate.2,5 It can replicate both in the soil and within the human body, and has a unique predilection for autoinfection, producing periods of disease that may reach 30 years or more. Microscopic stool examination remains one of the most important diagnostic tools with this parasite, but it must be borne in mind that a negative examination does not rule out the diagnosis, since appearance of the larvae in the stool is intermittent. The diagnostic yield of a single examination is 30%, which can be increased to 60% with five samples. Microscopic examination of duodenal aspirate can reach a yield of 90%. 1,2,4,14 |
